Antica Selva di Meana Estate

ANTICA SELVA DI MEANA ESTATE

Approximately 10 km. from Orvieto and in the district of Allerona is the Antica Selva di Meana Estate. It extends over 550 acres of rolling hills, gently descending towards the left bank of the Paglia river, where the valley of Orvieto’s sourroundings widens.

The Estate consists of six extensive holdings named as follows: Poggio Barile, Faustina, Pilello, Governo, Mulino and Casa Bruciata.

Technical Information

The use of sulky ploughs stripping away the soil and seeds growth under the vines avoids the need of herbicides. While fungicides are used sparingly, pesticides are never used.

Select Wines

The winery has three cellars with a total capacity of 5000 hectoliters of wine. One is equipped with advanced modern technology, the two remaining are barrel cellars with Slovenian oak barrels used to finish premium wines.

Production Quality

The micro-climate, sunlight, soil consisting of Pliocene sand, rich in mineral and fossil shells and sandy clay, yield perfect conditions for producing fine wines.
The combination of such a fine textured soil, indigenous vines and agricultural capacity and tradition have determined the conditions for a unique wine production.

Visit and Tasting

Scambia Winery and Estates

The Estate’history dates back to both Etruscan and Roman periods. In the mid 13th century this hilly territory became part of the Papal States and the demand for wine reached a decisive turning point. Progress of the new social classes supported large vineyard expansions.
Dr. Antonino Scambia took over the Estate in 1977, he recognized the wine growing potential of the area, supported by his wife later on, they maintained the genetic inheritance by grafting existing antique vines onto new rootstocks. Their efforts have been rewarded by the production of exceptional wines such as the world awarded Pinot Noir. The other wines with distinctive personality are Sangiovese, Montepulciano, Ciliegolo and Canaiolo for reds and Pinot Bianco and Orvieto for whites.
Also there is a production of superior quality extra virgin olive oil obtained from healthy olive fruits grown in the estate.
Bordered on the north by woods and adjacent to the Natural Park of Monte Rufeno, the area offers walking, cycling and riding across the beautiful landscape.
